Online talk show is like dream come true | Niagara Falls Review

Online talk show is like dream come true | Niagara Falls Review

by: John Law | Niagara Falls Review

It might be the most productive night of sleep Joe Stracuzzi ever had.

At some point last year, the Niagara Falls graphic designer dreamed about a Niagara-based music show that would be filmed at his house and aired over the Internet. He saw every moment, every detail.

“I woke up and said, ‘I gotta make this a reality.’”

He wasn’t sure how. He just picked a date -Nov. 28, 2008 - and put the word out.

On that night, he beamed the first episode of MOCtalk from his house via a webcam. Among the guests were Niagara musicians Pete Haverkamp, Carl David Onofrio and Danielle Oegema. Stracuzzi’s entire crew of volunteers was basically winging it.

“It was kind of illogical to bring on a crew that doesn’t know what they’re doing,” says an amused Stracuzzi.

The graphics were crude, the camera jittery and they barely got it on the web (the first attempt was a disaster), but MOCtalk was in business.

Nearly a year later, it bills itself as ‘Niagara’s only indie talk show,’ moving beyond its music mandate to spotlight all arts and culture. Nine shows are in the can, averaging between 600 to 700 online viewers each.

More important, the show has moved out of Stracuzzi’s house and films a new episode once a month in front of a live audience at the 4555 Cafe on Queen Street.

And the buzz is building.

Even if Stracuzzi can’t quit his day job yet, MOCtalk is soaking up every spare minute. The unique format lets singers, artists and comedians let loose in a relaxed format, free to cuss if they want or let down their guard.

The show’s growing audience packs the 4555 Cafe with every show, and the cameras are heading out to special events in the community like this past weekend’s Peace in the Park indie music fest in Niagara-on-the- Lake.

Stracuzzi compares the show to a “sticky ball” he rolled down a hill one day. It keeps getting bigger and momentum keeps growing.

“A friend of mine said it’s like holding a mirror to local talent,” he says. “All I want to do is provide a reflection of what’s happening downtown.”

Early episodes were hosted solely by blenderhead, a. k. a. local artist/DJ Jim Agar. Recent segments have brought Niagara singer Joel van Vliet aboard as co-host.

Stracuzzi loves the fact it’s Niagara artists spotlighting other Niagara artists. The show is now a “collective” of people who may not be technically proficient, but want to do their part.

“The biggest problem is that there was never an outlet for local musicians … until now,” he says.

“I think there’s an unbelievable amount of talent around here.”

Stracuzzi’s brother, Anthony, was living in London when MOCtalk began and liked what he saw so much, he moved back to Niagara to help out. In between painting jobs, he pitches in with guest relations and behind-the-scenes work.

“I’m just trying to keep Joe on MOCtalk as long as possible,” he says.

The show is archived at www.moctalk.com  The 10th episode will be filmed Thursday night at the 4555 Cafe. jlaw@nfreview.com

“Epiphany Symphony.”

“Epiphany Symphony.”

Like water blots dying to connect.
Crumbling under pressure of wind and attention.
Driven by force scattering like stars to the sky.
Deticated to the cleansing of things.
With a swipe of the hand to clear the view.
Dust clining to the beads to form mud so thick.
Just leaving enough to look through.
Like a situation defined as most difficult.
Kept in motion a feeling not of end.
Called onto finish business so busy.
Only to begin the end and finish with what was started.
Like a book read backwards, making no sense.
Words kept the same, mind kept from sane.
Lost in a world of the nonsense that is no sense.
Walking without a destination and no creation.
Beginning a painting without the soul idea.
Strokes in colours matching lights in speed.
Like life, like life and one shall succeed.
To give one a piece of peace and in silence it shall bloom.
Sinking like ships taking on water.
Sinking like love capturing the heart of ones daughter.
Clever books of the shelves.
Stealing imaginations of those souls they sell.
Lending time to work off the debt.
In debt do we trust to keep the heart murmur.
A murmur that of dysfuntion or that of literature.
Literal literature, something, oh so poetic.
A divine ritual some find most pathetic.
Spilling guts across the pages in metaphores.
Metaphorically to a closed mind, it may bore.
Standing on the edge of land on the tip of the shore.
Short and simple to long, added generously with a hint of principle.
From petals to the rose to pedals to the metal.
Racing against time and out of line.
Rules mishapen, always bent and crippled.
Rippled water aroused by the act of movement.
Collecting eyes of those surrounding.
Bounding their lives momentarily to something beautiful.
Within beauty lies reason and within that reason, lies you.
